Inter Miami hopes for Messi contract extension ahead of new stadium opening

Inter Miami CF is in negotiations with Lionel Messi to extend the Argentine star’s contract beyond 2025, according to ESPN sources.

Despite rumors about interest from clubs in other leagues, Inter Miami and the Argentina national team captain remain committed to continuing their partnership on the field — a relationship that began in July 2023 with a Designated Player contract.

“I hope the number 10 will inaugurate our new stadium next March. This decision rests with Messi, and we want him to finish his career here,” stated Jorge Mas, Inter Miami’s owner.

During his time at Inter Miami, Messi has achieved remarkable success:

  • Won the 2023 Leagues Cup
  • Secured the 2024 Supporters’ Shield
  • Reached the round of 16 in the 2025 Club World Cup
  • Scored 31 goals and 22 assists in 38 MLS matches
  • Earned the 2024 league MVP award

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano admits he’s not involved in contract talks with Messi — their focus remains on team performance as they prepare to face CF Montreal this weekend.
