Indonesia’s Top-Ranked Priska Nugroho Targets WTA Spotlight After Strong ITF Season

Indonesia’s Top-Ranked Priska Nugroho Targets WTA Spotlight After Strong ITF Season

At just 22 years old, Priska Madelyn Nugroho has steadily built a reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s most promising tennis players. Her journey on the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour has been defined by consistency, resilience, and a growing list of titles. Now, midway through 2025, Priska is maintaining strong form in higher-tier tournaments and setting her sights on a breakthrough into the WTA Tour.

Currently competing at the ITF W50 Taizhou, Priska recently faced Chinese player, Yidi Yang—an opponent she had previously defeated in straight sets earlier this year. Their rematch, closely contested and highly anticipated, underscored Priska’s rising competitiveness at the W50 level, where matches demand faster pace, strategic precision, and mental toughness.

Strong Start to 2025: Tested, but Unshaken

Priska has displayed impressive form throughout the 2025 season. One of her standout wins came at the ITF W15 Maanshan, where she defeated seasoned Thai player, Peangtarn Plipuech—a former WTA Top 200 competitor—6–0, 6–4. The convincing result reaffirmed her ability to compete at a high international standard.

At the ITF W35 Luzhou, Priska was edged out in a tight three-set singles match against Japan’s Saki Imamura. Yet she bounced back the following day in the doubles final, capturing the title with fellow Indonesian Janice Tjen. The duo overcame Imamura and Ikumi Yamazaki 6–4, 6–3, showing composure and cohesion under pressure.

As of June 9, 2025, Priska holds a WTA singles ranking of No. 298 and a doubles ranking of No. 398, just shy of her career-best No. 265 reached in July 2023. She continues to lead as Indonesia’s highest-ranked female tennis player, a distinction she has maintained for over two years.

Career Built on Experience and Progression

Priska’s rise has been deliberate and well-earned. She first drew international attention after winning the Australian Open girls’ doubles title in 2020. Since then, she has amassed 10 ITF singles titles and 13 doubles titles, competing across Asia, Europe, and Australia. Her career reflects not only competitive skill, but also strategic tournament planning, adaptability to different surfaces, and tireless discipline.

In addition to her individual success, Priska has made significant contributions to Indonesia’s national tennis team, including appearances in the Billie Jean King Cup and medal wins at the SEA Games.

Doubles Chemistry with Janice Tjen

One of the highlights of Priska’s 2025 season has been her growing partnership with Janice Tjen. The two have quickly become Indonesia’s top women’s doubles team, reaching multiple ITF finals this year—including their title win in Luzhou and a runner-up finish in Maanshan.

Their complementary playing styles—Janice’s aggressive baseline power combined with Priska’s sharp net play—have made them a dangerous pairing on the circuit. With further development, they have the tools to break into higher-level events, including ITF W75 and WTA 125 tournaments.

Toward the WTA Stage: Aiming for the Next Tier

With the second half of the 2025 season underway, Priska’s goals are increasingly clear: break into the WTA Top 250, earn a spot in Grand Slam qualifiers, and elevate her game through every competitive opportunity.

“I’m focused on building consistency, one match at a time. Breaking into the Top 250 and qualifying for bigger events is the next step,” Priska said in a recent interview.

Her upcoming schedule includes a mix of Asia-based W35 and W50 tournaments, where ranking points and high-level match experience will be crucial. With growing confidence and a sharp competitive edge, Priska Madelyn Nugroho is no longer just a rising prospect—she’s a serious contender on the cusp of a professional breakthrough.
