Indonesian Badminton Legend Iie Sumirat Passes Away at 74

The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has announced the passing of national badminton legend Iie Sumirat, who died on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the age of 74.

“A heartbreaking loss from Iie Sumirat, one of Indonesia’s badminton legends who brought pride to the nation on the global stage,” wrote PBSI’s official account on social media.

Born in Bandung, Iie Sumirat was a pivotal figure in Indonesia’s badminton dominance during the 1970s. He played an instrumental role in helping the national team win the Thomas Cup in both 1977 and 1979, as part of the legendary squad known as “The Magnificent Seven.”

That iconic lineup included:

  • Rudy Hartono

  • Liem Swie King

  • Christian Hadinata

  • Ade Chandra

  • Tjun Tjun

  • Johan Wahjudi

One of his most memorable moments came in the 1979 Thomas Cup final, when Iie Sumirat defeated Denmark’s top player Svend Pri, contributing two crucial points in both singles and doubles events — a vital contribution that secured Indonesia’s championship victory.

Iie Sumirat’s passing marks a profound loss for Indonesian badminton. His legacy will be remembered for his dedication, fighting spirit, and achievements that continue to inspire the next generation of athletes.
