World Cup 2026: Indonesia to Face Saudi Arabia, Iraq in High-Stakes Group B

The Indonesian national team is set to face a massive challenge in the fourth round of the AFC qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after being drawn into Group B alongside Saudi Arabia and Iraq — two of West Asia’s football powerhouses.

The official draw, held at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, positions Indonesia, under newly appointed head coach Patrick Kluivert, in one of the competition’s most competitive groups.

Opening fixtures confirmed

Indonesia will kick off their campaign against Saudi Arabia on October 8, 2025, followed by a second match against Iraq on October 11, 2025. Both matches will be crucial for the Garuda Squad’s ambition to qualify for their first-ever senior World Cup.

Head-to-head history

These opponents are far from unfamiliar. Indonesia has had contrasting results against both sides in recent encounters:

  • Vs Saudi Arabia: A draw in Jeddah, followed by a 2–0 victory in Jakarta

  • Vs Iraq: Three consecutive defeats — 5–1 (away), 2–0 (home), and 3–1 (2023 AFC Asian Cup)

Kluivert focused on preparation

Patrick Kluivert admitted that Group B presents a daunting task, but emphasized his confidence and commitment to preparing the team thoroughly.

“We are fully aware of the tough challenges ahead in this group,” said Kluivert.

“But we are focused on building a solid team and strengthening every line to ensure we’re ready for every match.”

The Dutchman, who took charge of the national team earlier this year, is tasked with continuing the momentum from the previous qualification stage while integrating a promising new generation of players.

Eyes on history

With the expanded World Cup format offering more slots to Asian nations, Indonesia’s dream of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is more alive than ever. The team enters this phase with high hopes, strong public support, and a renewed spirit.

Backed by a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, the Garuda Squad aims to defy the odds in what promises to be a thrilling and high-stakes group stage.
