Indonesia National Women’s Tennis Team Opens 2025 Billie Jean King Cup with Dominant Win

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Indonesia’s national women’s tennis team got off to a perfect start in the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group II, defeating the Philippines 3–0 in their opening tie on Monday, 16 June 2025, at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur. The result puts Indonesia in a strong position to chase promotion to Group I.

The tournament, held from 16 to 21 June 2025, uses a round-robin format, where each tie is crucial. The clean sweep over the Philippines gives Indonesia an important early edge in the group standings.

Janice Tjen Sets the Tone with Confident Singles Win

Indonesia’s opening point came from top player Janice Tjen, currently ranked No. 268 in the WTA. In the first singles match, Tjen showcased her sharp form and international experience, dominating her opponent in straight sets.

“I felt confident heading into this match. We’ve prepared well for this event, and I’m happy to get the first point for the team,” said Tjen after the match.

Her strong baseline play, precise shot placement, and composure under pressure reflect the growth she has experienced from international competition and structured training.

Aurellia Wijaya Secures the Tie with Second Singles Win

The second singles match saw Aurellia Wijaya step up with an equally strong performance. Calm and strategic in her approach, Wijaya controlled the rhythm of play and secured another straight-set win, giving Indonesia an unassailable 2–0 lead in the tie.

“Our team goal is clear — to take it one point at a time and stay focused,” Wijaya said.

“I’m proud to contribute to this important team win.”

Tjen/Wijaya Duo Completes the Sweep in Doubles

Despite having already clinched the tie, Indonesia fielded a competitive doubles team. Tjen and Wijaya teamed up again, delivering a cohesive performance to defeat their Filipino opponents in two closely contested sets, finalizing the 3–0 scoreline.

Their chemistry, aggressive net play, and smart positioning highlighted Indonesia’s strength not only in singles but also in doubles formats—an essential asset in international team events.

Coach and Federation Praise Discipline and Team Spirit

National coach Ricky Soebagio expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and mindset.

“Our strategy worked as planned. The players stayed disciplined and focused under pressure. A 3–0 win is a great start, but we have more battles ahead,” he said.

The Indonesian Tennis Federation (PELTI) also praised the team’s effort, pointing to improved training programs and increased international exposure as key drivers of recent success.

Promotion to Group I Within Reach

Indonesia now sits at the top of the group standings after this opening tie. But challenges remain, with upcoming matches against strong regional teams including Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, and Pacific Oceania.

Only the top team from the group will earn promotion to Group I—a major milestone that would raise Indonesia’s status in women’s international tennis.

With a promising blend of young talent, cohesive teamwork, and strong leadership, the Indonesian women’s team is emerging as one of the key contenders in this year’s Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group II.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Indonesia to see whether they can continue their winning momentum and claim their place among the elite in Asian tennis.
