Honda Racing President Koji Watanabe has provided updates on the development of Aston Martin’s 2026 Formula 1 power unit, marking the Japanese manufacturer’s return to the sport under new regulations.

Having previously secured two constructors’ championships and four drivers’ titles with Red Bull, Honda is now channeling its expertise into the partnership with the Silverstone-based team. The decision to re-enter F1 aligns with the sport’s 2026 engine rules, which mandate an equal 50/50 split between internal combustion engine and electric power.

“We’re not starting from scratch like in 2015. This time, the development process is progressing far more smoothly,” Watanabe stated during a press briefing at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Notably, Honda will reunite with legendary designer Adrian Newey, who recently joined Aston Martin as technical director and shareholder. Team director Andy Cowell revealed that Newey immersed himself in conceptual meetings on his very first day in March — actively listening to engineers’ insights and offering fresh perspectives to refine the car’s design.
