Hannah Hampton ready to replace Mary Earps as England’s main goalkeeper at Euro 2025

Hannah Hampton has expressed her determination to continue Mary Earps’ legacy as she prepares to become England’s first-choice goalkeeper at Euro 2025.

The question of who would be England’s number one goalkeeper was finally answered following Earps’ shocking retirement announcement from international football in late May — just weeks before this summer’s tournament.

“We have to respect her decision. Mary put women’s goalkeeping on the map for the younger generation — something that was never really a thing before,” Hampton stated.

The Chelsea goalkeeper made her senior England debut about three and a half years ago. Though initially serving as Earps’ backup, Hampton has now risen to become manager Sarina Wiegman’s primary choice.

Hampton acknowledged her career journey has been challenging — doctors once told her parents she couldn’t pursue professional football.

“I’ve always gone through life trying to prove people wrong. I wasn’t willing to accept the media scrutiny. I wanted to show who I am as a person,” Hampton added.
