Guatemala Makes History in Gold Cup After 29-Year Wait

The Guatemala national team has made history by advancing to the 2025 Gold Cup semifinals — an achievement last accomplished 29 years ago.

Luis Fernando Tena, the 67-year-old Mexican coach, couldn’t hold back his tears after his team defeated Canada in a penalty shootout.

“It’s impossible not to get emotional with the support from fans. It’s impossible not to get emotional hearing them sing the national anthem and seeing how the players fight,” said Tena.

Young goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro — making only his fourth appearance for the national team — emerged as the hero by saving Cyle Larin’s penalty kick.

Guatemala has successfully integrated local talent with U.S.-born players in their squad.

  • Olger Escobar
  • Aaron Herrera

These three U.S.-born players were part of Guatemala’s starting lineup in their victory against Canada.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for Guatemala, who continue their quest to reach the World Cup for the first time in their history.
