Guardiola plans to reduce Manchester City squad to avoid unhappy players

Speaking directly in Atlanta, Pep Guardiola revealed his plans to trim Manchester City’s squad — a move aimed at preventing player unhappiness in the upcoming season.

The Citizens currently have 27 players in the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup, including four new recruits:

  • Rayan Cherki
  • Rayan Aït-Nouri
  • Tijjani Reijnders
  • Marcus Bettinelli

“I don’t want to have six or seven players just sitting at home without playing. I’m doing this for them,” Guardiola stated ahead of the match against Al Ain.

The Spanish coach emphasized his preference to work with 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers — suggesting at least three players must depart before the Premier League begins.

Regarding Ilkay Gündogan’s future amid Galatasaray interest, Guardiola maintained that the 34-year-old midfielder remains in his plans despite increased competition in midfield with Rodri and Reijnders’ presence.
