New Group Format in FIFA Club World Cup 2025

The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States marks a new milestone in world football history. With a new format involving 32 clubs from six confederations, the tournament promises tougher competition and wider global exposure. However, behind the fanfare of innovation, several major challenges remain, especially regarding the interest of local audiences. The 2025 edition adopts a group format similar to the national team World Cup. Thirty-two clubs are divided into eight groups (A–H), each containing four teams. The top two from each group advance to the round of 16, followed by a knockout system until the final. Each club is guaranteed at least three group-stage matches, giving non-European teams greater opportunities to shine on the world stage.

The opening match between Inter Miami (featuring Lionel Messi) and Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, was surprisingly quiet. Out of a 65,000-seat capacity, only around 20,000 tickets were sold. FIFA has tried various promotions, from slashing ticket prices to offering special packages for students, but audience enthusiasm has yet to rise significantly.

The United States faces tough challenges as host. Local sports culture still favors American football and basketball, making global club football less accepted. The absence of several elite European clubs also reduces the tournament’s appeal. This tournament also serves as a test for infrastructure and market interest ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Various innovations such as “ref cam” and new rules are being trialed, but so far, they have not been enough to attract large crowds instantly.

The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 brings a more inclusive and competitive format. However, the low turnout at the opening match is a crucial signal for FIFA and local organizers to adapt to American sports culture. The success of this tournament will be a benchmark for the United States’ readiness to host global football events in the future.
