Gotham FC and United States women’s national team defender Tierna Davidson has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in her left knee — announced by Gotham FC on Wednesday.

Davidson had to leave the field before halftime in Friday’s goalless match against Houston Dash due to a non-contact knee injury.

“We are heartbroken for Tierna,” said Gotham FC General Manager Yael Averbuch West. “Our club will do everything we can to support her through this recovery and rehabilitation process. We know she will come back stronger than ever.”

This is Davidson’s second ACL injury — she previously suffered similar injury in her right knee in 2022 which caused her to miss the 2023 World Cup. The player who was appointed Gotham FC captain at the start of this season previously won Olympic gold medal with the US national team.

To replace Davidson in the USWNT squad that will face Brazil next week, the coach has called up defender Gisele Thompson. The US team is also still missing center-back Naomi Girma who hasn’t played this year due to calf injury.
