Gotham FC captain Tierna Davidson suffers serious ACL injury

Gotham FC and United States women’s national team defender Tierna Davidson has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to her left knee — the club announced she has been placed on the NWSL season-ending injury list.

The incident occurred during a goalless match against Houston Dash when Davidson had to leave the field before halftime due to a non-contact knee injury.

“We are heartbroken for Tierna,” stated Gotham FC General Manager Yael Averbuch West. “Our club will do everything we can to support her through this recovery and rehabilitation process. We know she will come back stronger than ever.”

This is Davidson’s second ACL injury — she previously injured her right knee in 2022 which caused her to miss the 2023 World Cup. The player, who left Stanford University early to turn professional, was part of the US team that won the 2019 World Cup.

Gisele Thompson has been named as Davidson’s replacement in the US national team squad facing Brazil this week. The US team is also missing defender Naomi Girma, who hasn’t played this year due to a calf injury.
