Goh Liu Ying highlights Chen/Toh’s performance decline in major tournaments

Former Malaysian mixed doubles badminton player Goh Liu Ying has observed the declining performance of Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei, who are currently under the guidance of Nova Widianto.

The pair who once held world number three ranking – now struggles to compete with elite world pairs. Despite reaching the BWF World Tour Finals 2024 final, their performance this year shows signs of decline.

The European tour became clear evidence of the Malaysian pair’s performance drop – they were eliminated in the round of 16 at Orleans Masters 2025 and round of 32 at All England Open 2025. Though currently ranked fourth in the world, Chen/Toh have yet to reach finals in BWF World Tour Super 750 and Super 1000 tournaments.

Facing this situation, Nova Widianto’s proteges need to conduct evaluation – particularly regarding their strategy against certain opponents.
