German Captain Gwinn Suffers Serious Injury During Victory Over Poland

The German women’s national team’s victory over Poland in St. Gallen, Switzerland, was overshadowed by an injury incident involving captain Giulia Gwinn. The key defender was forced to leave the field in tears after suffering a knee injury while denying a clear scoring opportunity for the opponents.

Christian Wück, Germany’s head coach, revealed that an MRI examination will be conducted in Zurich to determine the severity of the injury. “We cannot speculate now — the examination results will determine the actual condition,” he stated.

“We have 23 players and are confident that everyone can replace their teammates. Carlotta has proven that,” said Wück.

Carlotta Wamser — who replaced Gwinn in the 40th minute — impressed in her tournament debut. The eight-time European champions eventually won 2-0 thanks to Jule Brand’s contribution of a goal and an assist in the second half.

Germany — who last won the European Championship in 2013 — are now pursuing their first major title after falling short in the 2022 final against hosts England.
