German Captain Gwinn Suffers Knee Injury at Euro 2025

Giulia Gwinn, Germany’s captain, suffered a medial knee ligament injury during her team’s 2-0 victory over Poland in their Euro 2025 group opener.

The 26-year-old player was forced to leave the field in the 40th minute after twisting her leg while attempting to prevent a chance from Polish striker Ewa Pajor. Medical examination the following day confirmed an injury that will keep her sidelined for several weeks.

Coach Christian Wück and the players immediately visited Gwinn in the dressing room before returning to the field to show appreciation to the attending supporters. “We went straight to Giulia and talked to her, then we came back out to greet the fans,” said Wück.

This comes as a heavy blow for Gwinn who previously missed the 2023 World Cup due to her second ACL injury after her first one in 2020. The player, who was only appointed captain last February, has recorded 63 appearances and 14 goals with the German national team.

Germany will continue their Group matches against Denmark in the coming days before facing Sweden on July 12.
