Gerald Vanenburg selects local squad for U-23 national team in ASEAN Cup

Ahead of ASEAN Cup U-23 2025, coach Gerald Vanenburg has made a surprising decision by relying solely on players from Indonesia’s domestic league.

The squad will not feature big names like Marselino Ferdinan, Rafael Struick, Ivar Jenner, and Justin Hubner who were previously team’s key players.

“Players who are already at senior level need to focus on 2026 World Cup Qualifiers Asia Zone,” Vanenburg explained about his decision.

The Dutch coach chose to give opportunities to potential young talents — a decision that has been carefully considered including its risks.

Indonesia U-23 team will begin their tournament journey against Brunei Darussalam on Tuesday evening.
