Gerald Vanenburg changes Indonesia U-23 defensive formation

Gerald Vanenburg implements significant changes to Indonesia U-23 team’s defensive system — as seen in their opening victory at ASEAN Cup U-23 2025.

Young Garuda managed to defeat Brunei Darussalam with a decisive 8-0 score in Group A’s opening match yesterday. This match marked the debut of new formation under the Dutch coach’s guidance.

From 23 players previously selected by Shin Tae-yong for senior ASEAN Cup about seven months ago, 12 players remain trusted by Vanenburg. This number should have reached 13 players — however Rivaldo Pakpahan had to withdraw due to injury during training camp.

The most notable change appears in team’s defensive foundation — where Vanenburg chose to abandon the three-back system that was previously characteristic of Shin Tae-yong era.
