George Russell defends Derek Warwick over FIA sanction at Canadian GP

According to Motorsport.com, Derek Warwick — the 70-year-old Formula 1 steward — received a suspension for the Canadian GP due to his series of controversial media comments.

FIA announced that Enrique Bernoldi will replace Warwick’s position as steward from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva. Warwick is scheduled to return to duty at the upcoming Austrian GP after issuing an apology.

Warwick’s controversial comments, distributed by a gambling company, highlighted several drivers — including criticism of Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, and Yuki Tsunoda. He also commented on the collision incident between Max Verstappen and George Russell at the Spanish GP.

“We’re all entitled to our own views. What Derek said, I don’t think it offended anybody, hence why we’re going to see him back,” stated Russell after securing pole position at the Canadian GP.

The Mercedes driver added that stewards work as volunteers without fixed income — any sanctions beyond temporary suspension would feel excessive. This case differs from Johnny Herbert, who was permanently dismissed from steward duties earlier this year for similar reasons.
