George Russell Claims Canadian GP Pole, Toto Wolff Sends Positive Signals

George Russell has achieved an impressive feat by securing pole position at the Canadian GP — a performance that strengthens his position at Mercedes ahead of contract negotiations.

The British driver still lacks a confirmed seat for the 2026 season, despite currently holding fourth place in the drivers’ standings — ahead of both Ferrari drivers.

“He’s giving us all the reasons to do that quickly,” stated Toto Wolff to Sky Sports. “We know what he’s capable of doing and he has been leading this team now since a while. He has the pace and the right attitude.”

Speculation about Max Verstappen being linked to Mercedes emerged following Red Bull’s turbulent season last year. Responding to this, Russell remains confident in his abilities.

“It’s understandable that Max is always on the radar — why wouldn’t he be? He’s one of the GOATs. But it’s my job to prove my worth, and I’ve done that over seven years in F1,” Russell affirmed.

Now, Russell’s focus is on the Canadian GP race — an opportunity to secure his first win of the 2025 season and strengthen his bargaining position in upcoming contract negotiations.
