France Stuns Defending Champions England in Euro 2025 Opener

In the Euro 2025 Group D opening match in Zurich, France secured a 2-1 victory over defending champions England.

Marie-Antoinette Katoto opened the scoring for France in the 36th minute after converting a cross from Delphine Cascarino. Three minutes later, Sandy Baltimore doubled the advantage — capitalizing on England’s defensive disarray.

Earlier, England had found the net through Alessia Russo in the 13th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to Beth Mead being offside. Keira Walsh managed to score a consolation goal for England late in the match.

France’s midfield, led by Grace Geyoro — who celebrated her 100th national team appearance — dominated throughout the game. Wing play from Cascarino and Baltimore provided constant pressure on England’s defense.

This defeat puts Sarina Wiegman’s team in a difficult position — they must win their next match against the Netherlands. Meanwhile, France will face Wales in midweek.
