Following Indonesia U-17’s heavy 0-6 loss to North Korea in the quarter-finals of the 2025 AFC U-17 Asian Cup, football analyst Muhammad Kusnaeni has stressed the importance of strengthening the squad, particularly by involving diaspora players.

Although Garuda Asia have already secured qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Kusnaeni believes there is a clear need for comprehensive evaluation and physical upgrades to the team — especially to match the size and strength of future opponents from Europe or Africa.

“First is team strengthening by adding players with good physique and physical qualities to compete with players from Europe or Africa who might become our opponents in the group phase,” Kusnaeni said.

At present, Mathew Baker is the only diaspora player in the Indonesia U-17 squad. To find the optimal roster, PSSI is expected to implement a promotion-relegation system, opening the door for fresh local talents and overseas-based Indonesian players.

The call for reinforcements comes as Indonesia prepares to face a more demanding global stage, especially with FIFA expanding the tournament format from 24 to 48 teams — increasing the level of competition and diversity of playing styles Indonesia must be ready to face.
