FIFA pays tribute to Diogo Jota and André Silva at Club World Cup

FIFA paid tribute to Diogo Jota and André Silva who died in a tragic accident — the ceremony was held before the Club World Cup quarter-final matches in Orlando and Philadelphia.

The two Portuguese football players died in a Lamborghini car accident near Zamora, northwestern Spain — the incident occurred after midnight yesterday when their vehicle caught fire on a remote road.

At Orlando’s Camping World Stadium during the Al Hilal versus Fluminense match, players formed a circle at midfield while the video board displayed a photo of the brothers. At Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field during the Palmeiras versus Chelsea game, all players wore black armbands on their sleeves.

Pedro Neto, Diogo Jota’s Portugal national teammate, carried a jersey with Jota and Silva’s names as he entered the field — he raised the jersey assisted by Enzo Fernández during the moment of silence.

Spanish police are investigating the accident’s cause, suspected to be due to a tire blowout. Jota, who married Rute Cardoso two weeks ago, leaves behind three children. Meanwhile, Silva was a player for Penafiel club in Portugal’s lower divisions.
