FIFA Investigating Racism Allegations Against Rüdiger in Club World Cup Match

Antonio Rüdiger faced alleged racial abuse in the closing minutes of Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Pachuca in the Club World Cup.

Referee Ramon Abatti activated the anti-racism protocol — crossing his arms in front of his chest following a brief incident that occurred after a foul against the German national team defender.

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso confirmed that FIFA is now conducting an investigation into the incident. “We believe what Rüdiger said and it’s important to have zero tolerance in situations like this,” he stated.

Pachuca defender Gustavo Cabral — who clashed with Rüdiger before the incident, denied the racism allegations.

“There was nothing racist. I just called him ‘cagón de m—-a’ as we say in Argentina,” Cabral explained to reporters after the match.

FIFA has yet to provide official clarification regarding the incident as they await the referee’s report.
