FIFA Imposes Heavy Sanctions on Boca Juniors and Benfica Players

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has announced severe sanctions against three players involved in incidents during last week’s Club World Cup match.

Two Boca Juniors players, Ander Herrera and Nicolas Figal, each received four-match suspensions. Meanwhile, Benfica striker Andrea Belotti — was handed a two-match ban.

These sanctions were imposed based on Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code concerning unsportsmanlike conduct towards opponents and match officials. The incidents began with Herrera’s excessive reaction from the sidelines, followed by Belotti’s foul on Ayrton Costa, and ended with Figal’s tackle on Florentino Luis.

Boca Juniors must face Bayern Munich without both players at Hard Rock Stadium, while Benfica will meet Auckland City without Belotti. FIFA emphasized that all parties have the right to appeal this decision.
