FIA Releases More Transparent F1 Racing Guidelines for 2025

The FIA has announced new Formula 1 racing guidelines for the 2025 season that are now publicly accessible through its official website — a significant step toward greater transparency in the sport.

This previously confidential document has undergone substantial changes following several major incidents last season. The main focus of changes lies in overtaking rules — with greater ease for cars on the inside to execute passing maneuvers.

The new guidelines detail specific requirements for legal overtaking:

  • For inside overtaking: car must be alongside opponent’s mirror before apex
  • For outside overtaking: front axle must be ahead of opponent’s front axle at apex
  • For chicane and S-curves: priority given to first corner element

George Russell, Mercedes driver and GPDA director, welcomed these changes.

“Greater transparency within the governance of our sport is an important issue and this is a useful step. It will help media and fans understand the rules when we’re racing on track,” Russell stated.

Additionally, FIA also published a separate document on penalty systems and penalty points — a matter of interest as Max Verstappen currently sits one point away from a race ban heading into the Austrian GP.
