FIA Updates Driver Penalty Rules, Fines Reduced by Half

FIA Updates Driver Penalty Rules, Fines Reduced by Half

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has officially revised its penalty framework outlined in Appendix B of the International Sporting Code. One of the most notable changes is the reduction of fines for driver misconduct, particularly regarding the use of profanity.

Key Changes to Penalty Structure

  • The base fine has been reduced from €10,000 to €5,000.

  • Even lower fines apply in FIA world championship events.

  • The system now differentiates between controlled environments (like press conferences) and on-track incidents.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized that the update came after a thorough review with the input of seven FIA world championships and other stakeholders.

“As a former rally driver, I understand firsthand the range of emotions faced during competition,” said Ben Sulayem.

F1 stewards chair Garry Connelly noted that this revision offers clearer and more effective guidance for stewards to distinguish between professional infractions and emotionally charged outbursts.

What Drivers Should Be Aware Of

The update also includes key disciplinary points:

  • Suspended penalties can apply to first-time offenders.

  • Abuse of FIA officials will result in sporting penalties.

  • Racial or discriminatory behavior will be punished with greater severity.

  • Mitigating factors will now be considered in disciplinary proceedings.
