Erick Thohir reveals reason for choosing Surabaya for national team friendlies

Erick Thohir — PSSI Chairman and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises — revealed the strategic reasoning behind selecting Surabaya as the venue for Indonesia National Team’s friendly matches.

The Red and White team is scheduled to face two Middle Eastern teams — Lebanon and Kuwait — this September as preparation for the fourth round of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

“The selection of Kuwait and Lebanon as opponents is not without consideration — given that many teams from the Middle East will compete in the fourth round of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers,” explained Erick Thohir.

While the exact schedule remains unannounced, Patrick Kluivert’s team has secured their spot in the fourth round of qualifications — an achievement that opens Indonesia’s path toward the 2026 World Cup.
