Erick Thohir reveals reason for absence of Indonesian women’s football league

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir provided an explanation regarding the inactive Indonesian women’s football league at Super Soccer Arena, Kudus.

Unlike men’s football which now features VAR and foreign referees — Indonesian women’s football has been without a league competition since 2019.

The Indonesian men’s team continues to show progress — nearly qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and the U-17 team advancing to the 2025 U-17 World Cup finals.

“I am indeed sometimes called ambitious but sometimes partly conservative. In men’s football, we want to try to build World Cup success as soon as possible,” said Erick Thohir.

According to Erick Thohir, the main obstacle to running the women’s league is the limited talent pool available in Indonesia.
