Eng Hian reveals causes of Indonesia’s declining badminton achievements

PBSI’s Head of Development and Achievement, Eng Hian analyzes Indonesia’s declining badminton performance that only produced two titles in the first six months of this year.

The national team’s achievements were limited to BWF World Tour Super 300 level tournaments — Thailand Masters and Taipei Open. Declining performance has been evident since Malaysia Open until Indonesia Open 2025, where Indonesia failed to secure titles in four consecutive editions for the first time since the Superseries era.

At Indonesia Open 2025, independent men’s doubles Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi — reached the finals, while national team representatives Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto stopped in semifinals.

Eng Hian emphasizes the need to evaluate training program patterns and communication with main team athletes — especially after the entry of new coaches from last year’s selection.
