Emil Audero rises as national team’s first keeper, different fate at club

Emil Audero Mulyadi has taken over the first-choice goalkeeper position for Indonesia’s national team from Maarten Paes — a situation that contrasts sharply with his club status.

During the June international break, a significant shift occurred in the Garuda team’s goalkeeper hierarchy. Paes, who was previously the primary choice, had to accept a bench role after serving suspension in the match against China and remained as backup when facing Japan.

Audero, now 27 years old, is currently enjoying post-season rest following the European competition calendar. The Italian-born keeper has just completed his loan spell with Palermo in Italian Serie B — a period that proved quite productive for his career.

Despite national team success, a different situation awaits at club level. Upon returning to Como 1907, Audero is unlikely to secure the first-choice goalkeeper position at the Serie A club.
