Ellie Carpenter joins Chelsea from Lyon on four-year deal

Chelsea have announced the signing of Australia national team defender Ellie Carpenter from French club OL Lyon, as stated on the club’s official website.

The 25-year-old has signed a four-year contract and will reunite with head coach Sonia Bompastor — who moved from Lyon to west London last year.

Carpenter’s arrival comes a day after Canada national team defender Ashley Lawrence made the move in the opposite direction.

“I’m really excited about this new challenge — it’s a new adventure. It feels like the right move for me, and I can’t wait to get started and give my all for this club,” said Carpenter.

Carpenter holds impressive records — becoming the youngest player to represent Australia at age 15 and becoming the youngest female footballer to play at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Paul Green, Chelsea’s head of women’s football, stated that Carpenter is an athletic fullback who loves to attack and has won various titles including the Champions League during her five-year career in France.
