Drama in Toronto: Five IndyCar Drivers Out Within First 36 Laps

The IndyCar race at Exhibition Place street circuit in Toronto turned into a dramatic affair — five drivers had to end their race within the first 36 laps.

Santino Ferrucci became the first casualty when his car hit the wall at turn 7 during warmup. A similar fate befell Scott McLaughlin who lost a wheel after an early pit stop.

The incidents continued when Christian Rasmussen collided with Will Power resulting in front wing damage. Alexander Rossi, the 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner, suffered a major accident after unexpected light contact with the wall destroyed his car’s rear end.

“It wasn’t even a snap, just tracked out a little too wide and destroyed the rear of the car,” said Rossi after the incident.

The drama peaked during a restart when Jacob Abel and Josef Newgarden were involved in a crash — Abel’s car ended up on top of Newgarden’s Chevrolet.

Pato O’Ward eventually won this chaotic race, with Rinus VeeKay and Kyffin Simpson completing the podium thanks to their well-executed two-stop strategy.
