Derek Warwick Suspended from Canadian GP Steward Duties over Controversial Interview

The FIA has announced the suspension of Derek Warwick from his driver steward duties for the Canadian GP following a controversial interview he gave about incidents at the Spanish GP.

Enrique Bernoldi — operating from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva — will replace Warwick who made unauthorized comments about the penalty given to Max Verstappen after his clash with George Russell.

“I’m not condoning it, it was absolutely wrong. The FIA rightly gave him a penalty. Should it have been harsher? I actually think they got it about right,” Warwick stated in the interview.

The suspension stems from two key issues:

  • Warwick as an FIA steward publicly commenting on other stewards’ decisions
  • The interview being published by a PR agency for a gambling website

While suspended for the Canadian GP, Warwick — who has served as a steward for 15 years — is expected to resume his duties at the upcoming Austrian GP. His schedule for the remainder of the 2025 season including races in Hungary, Italy, Singapore, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi remains unchanged.
