Derek Warwick Suspended from Canadian GP Steward Duties over Controversial Comments

The FIA has announced the suspension of Derek Warwick from his steward duties for this weekend’s Canadian GP — a decision taken following a series of controversial media interviews.

The 70-year-old former driver made unauthorized critical comments about several active drivers — including Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, and Yuki Tsunoda. In his place, Enrique Bernoldi will officiate from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva.

“After discussion, Derek acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologized,” stated the FIA.

This case recalls a similar incident involving Johnny Herbert in early 2025 — when he lost his position as an F1 steward for providing comments to a betting company about penalty decisions against Max Verstappen at the Mexican GP.

Warwick, who has four F1 podiums and is a 1992 Le Mans 24 Hours winner, is expected to return to duty at the upcoming Austrian GP.
