Death threats against Morata after Nations League final lead to arrest

Spanish police have announced the arrest of a 19-year-old man in Málaga — the suspect was found guilty of making online death threats against Álvaro Morata and his family.

The threats emerged after the Spain captain missed a penalty kick in the 5-3 loss to Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final. Morata’s wife, Alice Campello, had previously shared the hateful messages they received following the match.

The perpetrator initially tried to cover his actions by reporting to police that his account was hacked. “Inconsistencies in the complainant’s statement seeking an alibi, along with further cyber agent checks — ultimately led to the suspect’s incrimination and confession,” stated the police in their announcement.

“I might not return in September. I feel bad for my teammates, but it’s part of life. The penalty? I didn’t take it well, I could have done better, but there’s nothing I can do now,” Morata said after the match.

Morata, now 32 years old, has scored 37 goals in 86 appearances for Spain — he successfully led the national team to the 2023 UEFA Nations League title and Euro 2024 victory.
