David Richards, chairman of Motorsport UK, has openly criticized the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for what he describes as a lack of transparency and concentration of power under president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

The conflict stems from Richards’ refusal to sign a confidentiality agreement required to attend a World Motor Sport Council meeting. In a critical letter sent last year, he raised concerns over structural changes that, according to him, centralize authority in the hands of the president.

“What is disappointing in this letter from Alberto is the disregard for the very real concerns that have been expressed,” Richards wrote, “not just by myself, but a growing number of people — the governance and constitutional organisation of the FIA is becoming ever more opaque.”

Alberto Villarreal, FIA’s general manager, defended the organization’s practices, stating that confidentiality agreements are standard and supported by the majority of council members.

In a follow-up response, Richards reaffirmed his hope for constructive dialogue with FIA’s legal counsel. He also expressed willingness to meet Ben Sulayem directly in the Middle East to find a mutually acceptable resolution.
