D.C. United appoints Rene Weiler as new head coach

D.C. United has announced the appointment of Rene Weiler as their new head coach — replacing Troy Lesesne who was dismissed last week.

The 51-year-old Swiss coach brings extensive experience from various leagues — including coaching stints in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Egypt, and Japan since 2009.

“Rene is a tactician with a proven ability to implement a clear and disciplined playing style,” said Ally Mackay, D.C. United’s general manager.

Weiler’s recent achievements include leading Servette FC to Swiss Cup glory, before being appointed as the club’s sporting director. His trophy collection includes:

  • Belgian Pro League title with Anderlecht (2016-17)
  • Egyptian Premier League championship with Al Ahly (2019-20)
  • Swiss Cup with Servette FC (2024)

“This is a club with a proud history and a passionate fanbase. I strongly believe in the project taking shape here,” said Weiler.

D.C. United — currently sitting 13th in the Eastern Conference — hopes to end their playoff drought that has lasted for six seasons.
