Spirit Star Croix Bethune Returns to Field after Lengthy Injury

According to ESPN, Washington Spirit midfielder Croix Bethune has officially returned to the pitch after being sidelined for eight months due to a meniscus injury.

The Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalist with the United States women’s national team suffered the injury during a ceremonial first pitch at a Washington Nationals MLB game—an unexpected incident that affected her season.

“I feel like I’m about 90%. I had a hip and quad situation that gave me more time to strengthen my knee. Overall, I’m at about 90–95% right now,” said Bethune.

Bethune’s Remarkable 2024 Performance

Prior to her injury, the 24-year-old made a huge impact in the 2024 season, recording:

  • 5 goals and 10 assists in 17 matches

  • NWSL Rookie of the Year

  • Four Rookie of the Month awards

  • Three Best XI of the Month selections

  • Midfielder of the Year award

Spirit Hopeful as Injuries Linger

Spirit assistant coach Adrian Gonzalez welcomed Bethune’s return, especially as the squad continues to face challenges with 10 players still unavailable, including Casey Krueger and Andi Sullivan, who are both on maternity leave.
