Cristiano Ronaldo absent from Diogo Jota’s funeral, faces criticism

Cristiano Ronaldo has drawn public attention for his absence at the funeral of his Portugal national team colleague, Diogo Jota — which took place at the Matriz de Gondomar Church, Portugal.

The funeral ceremony was attended by various football figures — including Liverpool’s delegation with coach Arne Slot and club management who came to pay their last respects.

Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Luis Montenegro attended the memorial mass the day before. Meanwhile, Portugal national team players Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo flew from the United States after representing Al Hilal in the 2025 Club World Cup.

Despite being among the first to express condolences over Jota’s tragedy — the Portugal national team captain was notably absent from his compatriot’s funeral procession.
