Cristiana Girelli leads Italy to Euro 2025 semifinal with victory over Norway

Cristiana Girelli delivered a masterclass performance with two goals as Italy defeated Norway 2-1 in the Euro 2025 quarterfinal at Stade de Genève, Switzerland. The victory propelled Italy to their first tournament semifinal in 28 years.

The 35-year-old striker — who has netted 61 times for Italy and claimed last season’s Serie A scoring title — proved decisive in crucial moments. Her first goal came from Sofia Cantore’s low cross, while the winning strike was headed home in the 90th minute.

Ada Hegerberg managed to equalize for Norway in the 66th minute, but earlier missed a penalty and squandered several golden opportunities. The Norway captain appeared devastated after the final whistle.

“This is something magical. Reaching the semifinals and being among the four best teams in Europe is something special,” said Girelli tearfully after the match.

Italy will face either England or Sweden in next week’s semifinal in Geneva. This marks remarkable progress for a team that was amateur status just six years ago before Serie A Femminile turned professional in 2022.
