Chou Tien Chen — the top seed at the 2025 Taipei Open — began his campaign with a hard-fought victory in the first round on Wednesday (May 7).

The 31-year-old shuttler had to battle fiercely to overcome Takuma Obayashi, winning 21-12, 9-21, 21-15.

“I wasn’t calm when leading in the third game. He kept pushing with incredible determination. But I was also prepared for his comeback and ready to go the full three games. In the end, I remained very composed,” said Chou Tien Chen.

The Taiwanese player holds the record for four Taipei Open titles — the highest-level BWF World Tour event in his home country. He first won in 2016, followed by consecutive victories in 2017, 2019, and 2022.

For this year’s tournament, Chou Tien Chen is accompanied by a new team member — Japanese sports science expert, Sato Kimitake, who has worked with him over the past year.

“His presence is still very new and brings a fresh vibe. It energizes the atmosphere on court. He also knows my body very well and can offer me useful tips during matches,” he explained.
