Emiliano Martinez, Aston Villa’s first-choice goalkeeper and Lionel Messi’s teammate in the Argentina national team, has emerged as Chelsea’s transfer target for next season — despite recently extending his contract until 2029.

Aston Villa’s failure to secure Champions League football for next season appears to have made the 32-year-old keeper’s future uncertain — even though he signed a contract extension less than a year ago.

Manchester United have also shown interest in acquiring Martinez as a solution to their defensive concerns — following Andre Onana’s inconsistent performance that saw him concede 53 goals and manage only 9 clean sheets in 40 matches last season.
