Pedro Neto Withdraws from Club World Cup After Diogo Jota’s Tragic Death

JAKARTA, July 4, 2025 — Chelsea winger Pedro Neto has been granted compassionate leave by manager Enzo Maresca and will miss the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup 2025 match against Palmeiras, following the tragic death of fellow Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota.

Jota, a former Liverpool and Portugal international, was killed in a car accident on the A-52 highway near Zamora, Sanabria, Spain. The fatal incident occurred when a tire on his vehicle reportedly burst while overtaking another car. The crash also claimed the life of his brother, Andre Silva, who was traveling with him.

The 28-year-old Jota had a distinguished career, most recently helping Liverpool secure a Premier League title before continuing his career abroad. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football world and deeply affected many of his former teammates — including Pedro Neto.

Neto and Jota shared a close friendship, having played together for the Portugal national team and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Neto was reportedly devastated by the news and requested time away from club duties to grieve.

Chelsea confirmed that Neto will not participate in the Club World Cup quarterfinal match, as the club offers full support during this difficult period.

Meanwhile, the global football community continues to pay tribute to Diogo Jota, remembering not only his talent on the pitch but also his warmth and character off it.
