Formula 1 CEO Reflects on Past Controversies and Future Innovation

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali — who previously served as Ferrari team principal — expressed his desire to see more technical debates in the championship, as reported by Motorsport.com.

Domenicali Discusses Standardization of Components and Sustainability

Referring to his Ferrari experience, Domenicali recalled several intriguing technical controversies — including the double disqualification at the 1999 Malaysian GP over illegal bargeboard issues that nearly handed the drivers’ title to Mika Hakkinen.

He mentioned several controversial technical innovations that had stirred debate in the past:

  • Double diffuser

  • FRIC system

  • Mass dampers

  • F-ducts

“I’ve lived through many of those controversies. Years ago, there were far broader grey areas than today — but F1 people still know how to push everything to the limit,” said Domenicali.

Regarding the future, Domenicali suggested that some car components could be standardized — such as gearboxes — due to minimal performance gains.

He emphasized the importance of focusing on development areas that appeal to modern viewers, like sustainable fuels.

“We must have the courage to accept that the landscape has evolved. Many things that once seemed cutting-edge no longer justify major investment,” he added.
