Carlos Sainz Sr withdraws from FIA presidential race

Mohammed Ben Sulayem is set to continue his FIA leadership unopposed — after Carlos Sainz Sr decided not to run in the upcoming December election.

This decision comes after Ben Sulayem received support from 36 member clubs, predominantly from the Americas, expressing their appreciation for his leadership and vision.

Despite facing various controversies — including criticism from Motorsport UK chairman David Richards and the resignation of deputy president for sport Robert Reid — Ben Sulayem’s position remains strong within the organization.

“Let him stand. That is democracy,” Ben Sulayem said regarding Sainz’s potential candidacy last May.

Without opposition, Ben Sulayem is expected to lead FIA until 2029. Uncontested elections are not uncommon in sports — as demonstrated by Gianni Infantino at FIFA and Witold Banka at WADA who were also re-elected unopposed.
