Carlos Sainz Sr withdraws from FIA presidency candidacy

Carlos Sainz Sr has announced his decision not to run against Mohammed Ben Sulayem for the FIA presidency in the upcoming election — a move that has sent ripples through the motorsport world.

The two-time World Rally Championship winner was previously reported by Motorsport.com to be considering his candidacy. Despite widespread support, the situation shifted after 36 racing clubs declared their backing for Ben Sulayem.

“After thoughtful reflection, I have concluded that the present circumstances are not ideal for my candidacy. My Dakar preparation would be compromised if I chose to run for president,” Sainz stated in his open letter.

Ben Sulayem’s leadership since 2021 has been marked by various controversies — including the dismissal of sustainability and inclusion director Sara Mariani, banning FIA members from meetings, and restricting drivers’ use of profanity.

With Sainz’s withdrawal, Ben Sulayem is likely to stand unopposed in the upcoming FIA presidential election.
