Carlos Sainz brings major impact to Williams beyond racing track

According to Williams sporting director Sven Smeets, Carlos Sainz’s arrival has brought extraordinary impact to the team — not just in racing performance.

“Carlos is an amazing person to work with,” Smeets told Motorsport.com. “He’s made a significant impact across various aspects — from car development to team preparation for the 2026 season.”

While early season required adaptation due to differences between Ferrari and Williams car philosophies, collaboration with Alex Albon has improved steadily. Both drivers successfully push the team in the same direction — evident from their similar car setups indicating the team is moving in the right direction.

Sainz’s influence extends beyond the track. A demo run in Madrid expected to attract 5,000-7,000 fans actually drew 25,000 people. Williams fan zones at various grand prix events like Australia, Miami, Barcelona, and London also recorded significant visitor increases.

The Spanish driver’s presence also strengthens Williams Driver Academy. “His arrival demonstrates our serious approach to the future — this greatly helps discussions with young drivers and their management teams,” explained Smeets.
