Carlo Ancelotti’s Debut as Brazil National Team Coach Ends in Stalemate Against Ecuador

Carlo Ancelotti officially made his debut as Brazil’s national team coach in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers (CONMEBOL) against Ecuador on Friday morning (June 6, 2025, WIB). Unfortunately, the legendary Italian manager’s first match ended without victory as Brazil was held to a 0-0 draw at Estadio Monumental, Guayaquil.

Brazil featured several changes in their lineup, relying on the attacking trio of Vinicius Junior, Richarlison, and Estevão Willian. Rodrygo was absent due to injury, while Raphinha was suspended. Throughout the match, both teams struggled to create clear chances. Brazil threatened through Vinicius Junior, but his shot was denied by Ecuador’s goalkeeper, Gonzalo Valle. Ecuador also created several dangerous moments, but Alisson Becker was alert in goal.

Statistically, Brazil controlled only 48% of possession, producing three shots (two on target), while Ecuador registered seven attempts with three on target. This result was seen as disappointing for both Brazil and Ancelotti, who was expected to bring significant improvement after a poor previous campaign. Brazil’s play was considered lacking in aggression and creativity, even though their defense was solid.

With this result, Brazil remains in fourth place in the standings with 22 points, while Ecuador climbs to second with 24 points. Ancelotti’s debut highlights the need to improve Brazil’s attacking creativity and effectiveness in upcoming matches.
