Carlo Ancelotti Receives One-Year Prison Sentence from Madrid Court

According to Madrid court statement, Carlo Ancelotti — current Brazil national team coach — has been sentenced to one year in prison and fined €386,000 for tax evasion related to his image rights income while managing Real Madrid.

Under Spanish law, Ancelotti is likely to receive a suspended sentence — as verdicts under two years for non-violent crimes rarely require defendants without prior criminal records to serve prison time.

The court cleared Ancelotti of similar charges for 2015 as it couldn’t prove he stayed long enough in Spain to incur tax obligations. Prosecutors had previously sought a four-year and nine-month prison sentence and €3.2 million fine.

“Will not make comments for now,” said Carlos Sánchez, Ancelotti’s press officer, to Associated Press.

The Brazilian Football Confederation stated in their announcement that they continue monitoring the case development. Ancelotti is one of many high-profile names in Spanish football investigated by tax authorities — with many similar cases settled out of court.
