Canada’s heavy defeat to USA triggers harsh criticism from coach Stoney

Canadian women’s national team coach Casey Stoney expressed deep disappointment after her team’s heavy 3-0 loss to the United States at Audi Field — a performance she called “inexcusable.”

“Talk is cheap. We can keep talking about winning the World Cup and things we’re going to do, or we can actually put things into action,” Stoney stated.

The United States team scored all three goals from set pieces — a free kick, corner kick, and throw-in. Sam Coffey opened the scoring in the 17th minute, followed by Claire Hutton’s header before halftime, and Yazmeen Ryan added the final goal in the closing minutes.

Stoney harshly criticized her players’ fitness levels and lack of playing time at their clubs — an issue she insists must be addressed before the 2027 World Cup.

“You can tell, every single one of their players starts every week for their clubs. I have a problem: my players don’t. Some are out of season, and it showed,” Stoney added.

This match served as the first test against a top opponent for Canada — the result indicates there’s significant work ahead.
